From Dorothy at Mariposa 1:05pm Wednesday

This is a forward from another list, RE: Greenfield and also Orr Springs.

(This paragraph is for those who haven't heard the news on KZYX this
morning. Personally gathered information is below. 19,200 acres have
now burned in Mendocino County. There are more than 131 fires (no
exact number), with more expected to start, and 107 are unattended and
probably increasing in size. Average degree of containment of fires is
5%. Evacuation warnings have been issued for some new areas, including
the community of Cummings (where is that?), Leggett, and the Dehaven
and Howard Creek areas near Westport. Oregon and Nevada are sending in
firefighters and Mike Thompson says more help will come to the state
from outside, but it won't be here for a few days). Lynn Meadows of
Greenfield Ranch reported on KZYX this morning that the Jack
Smith/Radical Ridge fire (referred to as Jack C.I. in the data sheet
from the Office of Emergency Services that I sent out yesterday), is
moving northeast. Homes on Radical Ridge have been circled by
bulldozers and the fire is heading away from them. That fire merged
with the Singley Ranch fire on the west end, which is also heading
northeast (I think), and is still on the north side of Redwood Creek.
She said it's windy up there (10 mph, gusting to 15), and cold and
humid. People on Greenfield Ranch would like volunteers to help them
clear around their homes, limb trees, etc. Please call Lynn at 462-2439).

Air quality idea: bring plants indoors.
Paula Ondov of Running Springs Ranch reports that the fire has not
crossed Running Springs Road or Orr Springs Road, and so far no houses
have been lost up there, though fire has come close to some
outbuildings. The fire crested the ridge above the cliffs that are
directly over Orr Hot Springs Resort and as of this morning it hit a
fire break and there are no flames, just a little smoke and charred
grass.. Paula drove down to Montgomery Woods last night and saw no
sign of fire from the road. As far as she knows the big trees are
still standing. Orr Springs Resort is fine.
Randy Wood, who lives on Orr Springs Road west of Orr Hot Springs,
mobilized a group of his employees and put out a small fire that had
been smoldering in the canyon below his house from the beginning. YES!

Note from Kate: on KZYX this morning they said that food for the
firefighters was not a problem. Does anyone know anything to the
contrary?

Thanks Deborah. I'm wondering how many people have or are evacuating up there. My place is near Orr Springs gate I so feel relatively secure. I'm back in the Bay Area now after doing all I could to make my place fire safe. Not sure at this point if I should go back up to the ranch and start moving my stuff into storage.
