Yolla Bolly News

I work for the Forest Service and I wanted to let you know that due to reductions in other fire activity statewide, we are staffing up the Yolla Bolly fires with more personnel. A specialized overhead team took over the fires Friday 7/25. Prior to that, the fires had been managed by a team in the Hayfork area, with most of their attention given to areas of development around Hayfork and nearby areas. We expect to have more action taken against our fires and hopefully we will see some improvement. There is a large amount of vegetation inside the fire perimeter that was not burned when the fire went through the first time, consuming mostly ground fuels and low vegetation, so that overstory fuel will continue smoldering for some time. Our regular fire season is usually getting going about this time so we are way ahead of schedule. We are hoping for the rest of summer to be cooler and moister but who knows. We have been doing thinning and ground fuel treatments outside of the wilderness and we hope to preserve at least some of the forest with aggressive treatments.
